THE MUSICIANS
Henry Nicholson is an Ōtautahi Christchurch-based violinist, conductor and artistic director. He completed a Master of Music majoring in performance violin and conducting with Professor Mark Menzies and Associate Professor Justin DeHart at the University of Canterbury in 2023, having graduated from Burnside High School in 2017. He studied conducting with Dr Helen Renaud and Professor Mark Menzies, and has been an active participant in the CSO Conducting Masterclass with CSO Chief Conductor Benjamin Northey.
As a conductor, Henry directs numerous community choirs including Risingholme Singers and Canterbury Singers as well as directing masses and concerts with CBS Music. He also took over the role of Community Choir Director from Sandra Norquay for the Christchurch Choral Festival in 2020. Henry was invited to conduct and perform in ensembles at the CANZ Nelson Composers Workshop in both 2020 and 2021.
Henry’s experience performing on the violin spans nearly 20 years, performing many styles with a special focus on experimental renaissance, baroque, and contemporary compositions. He is a regular soloist and conductor with the CBS Choir and Orchestra, also being their principal second violinist. He was also appointed concertmaster and assistant conductor of the UC Christchurch Youth Orchestra until 2021. Henry is a founding member of Sælvage Collective, a dynamic new music ensemble of composer-performers based in both Ōtautahi Christchurch and Ōtepoti Dunedin.
Justin Hodges is an 19-year-old violinist based in Christchurch.
He has been awarded several music scholarships & awards, including the Award of Excellence by the Royal Overseas League in the Specialist music programme. Justin passed his ATCL Diploma with Distinction in 2016 and LTCL Diploma with Distinction in 2018.
Rakuto Kurano has been described as a musician with “flair and panache” by the Christchurch Mail, and has established himself as a versatile Japanese/New Zealand performer and composer. He has extensive experience touring around New Zealand as a violinist, violist, and pianist. International appearances include performances in Japan and Vietnam. As a performer of contemporary music, Kurano was invited to perform in the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM) & Asian Composers League (ACL) double festival in 2022 as a violinist, violist, and pianist, where he performed 10 works by composers from all around the world. Orchestral experiences include joining the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra at the age of 18, performing with NZ Opera, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, Hawke's Bay Orchestra, Secret Sinfonia, and more. As a recording artist, he has recorded and released many of his own works, but also has experience playing in recordings for other artists, including UK singers Aled Jones and Russell Watson with the BMG label (UK).
He is currently an Artist in Residence at the Aspiring Lifestyle Village in Wanaka and Artistic Director of the Magic Carpet Music Trust.
